DOES YOUR WHOLE FAMILY NEED TO GO GLUTEN FREE?
If your child is diagnosed with coeliac disease, does the whole family need to go gluten free? Dietitian and health expert Penny Dellsperger answers.

OUR SON HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH COELIAC DISEASE. SHOULD OUR FAMILY GO GLUTEN FREE?
No. While a gluten-free diet can be nutritious if well-managed, it’s not recommended for those without coeliac disease. A gluten-free diet is not healthier and gluten-free staples are more expensive than their counterparts.
Inadequate gluten intake can also interfere with coeliac disease screening in family members. It may seem kind for the whole family to go gluten free but it’s important that your child is aware of which foods are acceptable and which are not. Home is the ideal place to teach them that their food will sometimes be different to others and that’s okay.
